Intestinal Barrier Function Test
A healthy intestinal barrier is very essential for optimal nutrition. If this barrier (made up of mucosal cells and secretions, and a protective friendly bacterial layer) is defective, undigested proteins, harmful bacteria, yeast and toxins can enter the blood and lymphatic system and circulate to organs of the body. If it reaches the brain, it can directly or indirectly be harmful and adversely affect the immune system. The above described condition is called the leaky gut/leaky brain syndrome. Testing for the integrity of the intestinal barrier can now be done by utilizing a saliva or a blood sample, or a combination of both.
